There are probably a lot of people wondering why Apple has never equipped their iPhone with an AMOLED display, and their answer to that
question is their newest innovation, the Retina display. It’s a high
resolution 960×640 (the highest so far in the market) display with an
equally impressive record setting contrast ratio of 800:1 which is
unheard of in mobile phones.

As seen here when placed side-by-side with the HTC Evo 4G, the Retina
display on the iPhone 4 looks significantly sharper and brighter than
the AMOLED display of the WiMAX-enabled Android phone. The difference
is likewise apparent even when compared with the Apple’s own product,
the iPhone 3G S. We’re not sure how it’ll stack up against an actual
AMOLED display, but it certainly looks good.
Going against the
mainstream has its drawbacks, but as evidenced here by Apple’s choice
to forego the AMOLED craze, it certainly does have its advantages as
well. They’ve come out with a better technology that can rival the
AMOLED that’s uniquely their own. The question is, will the
high-resolution Retina display have a negative effect on the iPhone’s
battery life? That’s what we want to know and will hopefully be
answered once the first set of iPhone 4 full hands-on reviews come out.
